Weekly Calendar 12/15-12/19

Monday 12/15/08
  • Objective: Study & practice how to integrate quotes into an essay
  • Activities: 1) Exams returned, 2) Lesson on quote integration, 3) Practice with sample quotes
  • Homework: Write first and second well developed body paragraphs of your OMAM essay, following the thee-chunk paragraph structure we've studied in class and integrating quotes the way we practiced today. Type if possible & print out before class.
Tuesday 12/16/08
  • Objective: Check body paragraph writing structure & integration of quotes
  • Activities: 1) Writer's chair, 2) Work on body paragraphs, 3) turnitin.com guidelines & practice
  • Homework: Finish writing all three well-developed body paragraphs of your OMAM essay, following the thee-chunk paragraph structure we've studied in class and integrating quotes the way we practiced today. Type if possible & print out before class.
Wednesday 12/17/08
  • Objective: Study & practice how to write developed introductory and concluding paragraphs
  • Activities: 1) Lesson Notes on introductory and concluding paragraphs, 2) Draft intro
  • Homework: Finish writing your well-developed introductory and concluding paragraphs for your OMAM essay. Type if possible and print out before class.
Thursday 12/18/08
  • Objective: Revise essays
  • Activities: 1) Power Words: revision & editing, 2) peer- & self- revision, 3) laptop workstations for final revisions
  • Homework: Type in final revisions to essay to ensure excellent essay and paragraph structure as well as use of examples/quotes. Use Lesson Notes and rubric as a guide.
Friday 12/19/08 (OMAM Essays Due Today - 100 pts)
  • Objective: Edit & submit essays
  • Activities: 1) Last Open Mic of the term, 2) laptop workstations for final edits, 3) peer- & self-edits, 4) submit final essays to www.turnitin.com by 5pm
  • Homework: Finish up any missing or challenge work needed. Marking Term 2 closes on Tuesday 12/23.

Weekly Calendar 12/5-12/12

Monday 12/8/08 (SSR Letters Due Today - 40 pts)
  • Objective: Continue Socratic Seminar on OMAM
  • Activities: 1) Socratic Seminar, 2) Exam review, 3) OMAM annotation grades returned
  • Homework: 1) Make & study flashcards on the different elements of a story (see green Lesson Notes) with a short definition/explanation and sub-elements identified for each major element. 2) Review grammar rules for good/well & homophones.
Tuesday 12/9/08
  • Objective: Finish Socratic Seminar & prepare for exam
  • Activities: 1) Socratic Seminar, 2) Exam review
  • Homework: For each of the six elements of a story (see green LN), find one great example passage from OMAM and explain how the passage shows the element & sub-elements; for plot, do a plot map/chart for OMAM
Wednesday 12/10/08 (OMAM Exam Today - 100 pts)
  • Objective: Demonstrate knowledge of OMAM, elements of a story, and key grammar points
  • Activities: 1) Exam on OMAM, elements of a story, and grammar points
  • Homework: 1) Read & review essay questions for OMAM, 2) select one question you are very interested in, 3) write a developed brainstorm on what question, with lots of your own original ideas & examples from the book (1+ page)
Thursday 12/11/08
  • Objective: Introduce essay structure & thesis
  • Activities: 1) Power Word: thesis, 2) lesson on essay structure, 3) practice outlining with sample essay
  • Homework: Completely fill in the outline for your essay on OMAM. Use phrases or complete ideas on each line (more than one word, less than a full sentence).
Friday 12/12/08
  • Objective: More practice with essay outlining
  • Activities: 1) Open Mic!, 2) highlight outlines, 3) highlight sample essay, noting use of quotes as CDs
  • Homework: Find
    passages & page numbers form OMAM that support/demonstrate each of your CDs in your essay. Add page #s and a brief summary of the scene to your outline for every CD in every body paragraph.

  • Objective: Explore thematic elements of the story
  • Activities: 1) Grammar practice with homophones, 2) Lesson Notes on Theme, 3) Examine themes in OMAM
  • Homework: Read & annotate with Level 2-3 notes Ch5 (p.84-98) in Of Mice and Men
Tuesday 12/2
  • Objective: Wrap up SSR Book Groups Round 2
  • Activities: 1) SSR & Quickwrite, 2) Book Groups meet, 3) Grammar practice with homophones
  • Homework: Read & annotate with Level 2-3 notes Ch6 (p.99-107) in Of Mice and Men
Wednesday 12/3
  • Objective: Explore plot & conflict elements in the story
  • Activities: 1) Grammar practice, 2) Discuss the end of the novel!!, 3) Lesson Notes on Plot and Conflict elements of the story
  • Homework: Answer these two questions in a 1.5 page analysis, organized into multiple well-structured paragraphs: 1) Describe what you believe is the plot structure of the novel, and explain how/why the climax is the climax. 2) What is the central conflict of the novel; what type of conflict is it (see green packet) and how is it developed?
Thursday 12/4
  • Objective: Prepare for Socratic discussion
  • Activities: 1) Quiz on homophones, 2) SSR & Quickwrite, 3) Develop questions for Socratic discussion
  • Homework: Pre-writing for Socratic Discussion, according to guidelines that will be provided (they will be posted here by Wed 12/3)
Friday 12/5
  • Objective: Demonstrate analytical thinking through Socratic Discussion
  • Activities: 1) Open Mic!, 2) Socratic Discussion (graded) on OMAM, following guidelines
  • Homework: Finish your SSR Response Letter, which is due Monday 12/8 for 40 points
  • Note: Submit your OMAM book today for your Annotation Grade. Grading is based on three criteria: 1) Completion & volume of notes, especially at key points in the text, 2) Variety of notes, including a range of types we studied such as connections, opinions, predictions, questions, author's style, etc. (see yellow lesson notes), 3) Development of deep and insightful thoughts into Level 2 & 3 notes.

  • Homework: Read 25-30 pages in your SSR book and annotate with 6-10 Level 2-3 notes. You should be about 3/4 way through your book by the end of the weekend.

  • Homework for everyone: Write a 4+ chunk reflection on the production of Romeo & Juliet, responding to one of the questions on pages 6-11 in the Romeo & Juliet packet
